Paranormal Investigations
Move beyond storytelling to active investigation. Use equipment, explore restricted areas, and search for evidence yourself.
Paranormal investigations offer something standard ghost tours cannot: active participation in the search for evidence. Instead of listening to guides tell stories, you use equipment to conduct your own exploration of allegedly haunted locations—often in areas closed to regular visitors.
These experiences appeal to believers and skeptics alike. Believers hope to capture evidence; skeptics enjoy applying scientific thinking to extraordinary claims. Either way, spending hours in reportedly haunted locations after dark creates memorable experiences regardless of what you conclude about the paranormal.
Investigation experiences range from brief introductions with provided equipment to multi-hour sessions in restricted areas. Some locations, like the Old City Jail in Charleston, have hosted television paranormal teams and maintain reputations for consistent activity.
Common Investigation Equipment
EMF Detectors
Electromagnetic field meters detect fluctuations that some believe indicate paranormal presence. Skeptics note that electrical wiring and appliances also trigger readings.
Spirit Boxes
These devices rapidly scan radio frequencies, producing white noise that allegedly allows spirits to communicate. Results require interpretation and remain controversial.
Infrared Cameras
Night-vision and thermal cameras capture images in darkness and detect temperature variations. Some investigators claim to photograph apparitions invisible to the eye.
Digital Voice Recorders
Used to capture EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena)—sounds or voices not heard during recording but appearing on playback. Interpretation remains subjective.
What to Expect
Duration: Investigation experiences typically last 2-4 hours, with some overnight options available at select locations. Longer sessions allow time for multiple investigation techniques.
Group Size: Small groups (6-12 people) are standard to maintain quiet conditions and allow everyone equipment access. Private investigations can sometimes be arranged.
Equipment: Most experiences provide equipment, but you're often welcome to bring your own. Ask about policies when booking.
Physical Requirements: Investigations often access areas not designed for visitors—uneven floors, stairs, limited lighting. Mobility limitations should be discussed before booking.
A Note on Evidence
No paranormal investigation has produced evidence that meets scientific standards for proof of ghosts. Equipment readings have natural explanations; photographs show artifacts of digital imaging; EVPs depend on subjective interpretation.
This doesn't mean investigations aren't worthwhile. The experience of exploring allegedly haunted locations, using equipment, and drawing your own conclusions has value regardless of metaphysical beliefs. Many participants enjoy the process without expecting definitive proof.
